Progressive lenses: how to compare brands and choose

Progressive lenses combine distance, intermediate and near viewing zones. Choosing them means assessing your visual needs and frame: no single brand is best for everyone.

Design, material and coating are separate choices

The design arranges the viewing zones. The material and its index affect lens characteristics, while coatings add functions such as anti-reflection. Essilor documentation lists Stylis 1.67 as a material, not a separate progressive design range.

Progressive lens brands and families

Varilux (Essilor)

Varilux is an Essilor progressive lens family. Ask for the exact design name rather than comparing the brand alone.

ZEISS SmartLife

ZEISS offers SmartLife progressives with different levels of individualisation. Frame measurements and how the frame sits are part of the choice.

HOYA Hoyalux iD

HOYA offers Hoyalux iD designs; its documentation describes individualised options such as MyStyle V+. Check the design and parameters included in each proposal.

What to compare in two quotations

  • Exact design and level of individualisation.
  • Material and index, separately from the design.
  • Included coatings and optional extras.
  • Centring measurements, fitting height and frame adjustment.
  • Total price and actual review or warranty terms confirmed by the optician.

The frame matters too

Not every frame suits every progressive lens. A professional must check fitting height and adjustment. A brand name or photograph does not establish compatibility.

Adaptation and follow-up

Adaptation is not the same for everyone. Ask for instructions for your lenses and a fitting review; do not choose on the promise of adapting within a fixed number of days.
