Ray-Ban Meta Gen 3 feels less like a tech experiment and more like a pair of glasses you might actually wear every day. The important choice is not only what the electronics can do, but which frame and lenses suit you.
Three frame shapes, many combinations
Wayfarer is the familiar classic, Aviator has a lighter outline, and Zena offers a different silhouette. Meta lists 27 colour-and-lens combinations across Gen 3. That does not mean 27 separate frame designs: lens, finish and size can change within a model.
What has changed
Meta specifies a 12 MP camera, video up to 3K, six microphones and up to nine hours of battery life, depending on use. There is a configurable action button, a slimmer design and adjustments to the temples. Fit still matters as much as a spec sheet.
Our honest first impression
After trying them, the audio improvement is noticeable, including a more immersive feel. Calls and voice use made a better impression on us, while the slimmer frame feels more comfortable. Battery and camera have moved forward too. This is the first generation we can readily imagine appealing beyond early adopters. Sun or prescription?

What if you do not want a camera?
Ray-Ban Meta Audio is a separate camera-free family, in Clubmaster and Burbank shapes. Meta quotes up to 12 hours of use and up to 48 further hours from the case. It is not simply another Gen 3 colourway.
What changes on an ordinary day
Smart glasses do not have to replace your phone to be useful. Their appeal is in the small interruptions they remove: answering a call while walking, hearing directions without shutting out the street, or capturing what you see without reaching for a screen first. Open-ear sound still lets you hear your surroundings; it is not meant to reproduce the isolation of sealed headphones. Many tasks remain better on a phone, and that is fine.
In our first hands-on experience, audio is one of the most persuasive improvements. It sounds fuller and more immersive, while calls and voice interaction leave a stronger impression. This is an initial observation, not a controlled test in every level of traffic or wind. The more interesting point is that the electronics are less conspicuous when you are simply wearing the glasses.
A useful camera needs thoughtful use
Meta's 12 MP camera and up-to-3K video make sense when the moment matters more than setting up a shot: a walk, a trip or something you want to capture from your own point of view. A phone remains better when you want to frame, review and deliberately compose an image. We have not run a repeatable comparison of image detail, stabilization or recording endurance, so we will not turn a specification into a test result.
The front capture LED alerts people around you when photos or video are being taken. It does not replace asking permission in private conversations, workplaces or other sensitive settings. Hands-free convenience comes with the same responsibility as any other camera.
Three frames, three different first impressions
Wayfarer is the familiar choice if that shape already suits you and you want the technology to blend in. Aviator changes the outline of the face and may appeal to someone who never felt at home in a Wayfarer. Zena makes more of a style statement and deserves to be judged on a face, not only in a product render. These are style and fit distinctions, not a ranking of their electronics.
We would choose in this order: fit and measurements first, the lenses you will really wear second, and colour or finish last. A beautiful frame that slides down your nose, or a sun lens you cannot use through your daily routine, is rarely the best purchase.
A pre-purchase checklist worth taking seriously
Up to nine hours is Meta's quoted maximum, not a promise that a day of music, calls and recording will always last nine hours. Consider the charging case part of the routine. Check phone and Meta AI app compatibility, the availability of the features you care about in your country and language, and the delivery status of the exact frame-and-lens configuration.
If you need vision correction, clear display lenses are not prescription lenses. Confirm the exact frame reference, your prescription and optical fitting before ordering. If you do not want a camera, look at Meta Audio rather than expecting a different Gen 3 lens to remove it. Those two questions — what you need to see and what technology you want to wear — narrow the choice quickly.
Our provisional verdict
Gen 3 feels like the point at which these glasses can appeal well beyond technology enthusiasts. The slimmer frame, stronger audio and more convincing voice experience matter because they make the product easier to live with. Fit and lenses still decide whether you will actually wear it. Our early view of the camera and battery is positive, but we have not published repeatable measurements of either; we will update this guide when we have them.
AI is the biggest open question. We are interested in Meta's announcements, but a future or region-limited feature should not be your only reason to buy today. Choose on the basis of what you can use now, and regard the rest as potential rather than a guarantee.
