Bollé Lightshifter: the lens name is the part you should not lose

A black cycling frame may look straightforward to identify. The lens makes the job less simple. Two pairs with a similar front can have different filters, and a photograph does not necessarily reveal which one you are looking at.

The older Bollé Lightshifter 12652 reference combined Matte Black with Phantom Brown Red. It appeared in historical links to OpticalH, but the exact reference is not listed in our current catalogue. This guide explains what to keep when researching that pair or asking about a replacement.

Write down the lens name alongside the frame

Lightshifter identifies a family, not one universal lens specification. The older cycling catalogue records 12652; Bollé's current documentation lists the Black Matte / Phantom Brown Red combination as BS020009. That is useful documentary context, not a reason to assume that every component from two differently coded units is interchangeable.

For the current documented combination, the manufacturer specifies a category 2–3 photochromic lens, medium fit, nylon frame and 34 g weight. Adjustable nose pads, lens ventilation and Thermogrip contact points are among its construction details. Other variants can use different lenses.

Photographs show colour better than they explain function

When comparing a lens, look for its complete name and declared category. The attractive appearance of a mirrored surface is not a specification. If a listing shows only “Phantom”, ask which Phantom lens it means before comparing it with the one you know.

Think about your familiar route as well. Where does the light change, when do you ride, and what bothers you about your current pair? Those questions make a technical description easier to assess. They are more useful than collecting several feature names without deciding which problem you want to solve.

Try the frame with the equipment you actually use

A cycling frame has to share space with your helmet. Check the position of the temples with the straps and helmet supports, then look down as you would at the road or a device. Pay attention to pressure points and stability, not just the front view in a mirror.

If you need vision correction, ask about the precise model and the available solution before buying. A compatibility statement for a family is not an individual fitting assessment. Bring the full reference so the question starts with the right frame.

For replacement parts, make the identification easy

Photograph the temple markings and the original label if you have it. Add the lens name and an image of the part you need. Before ordering a replacement lens, obtain confirmation for that exact model. A similar curve or colour does not establish compatibility.

The manufacturer's Lightshifter page and the 2020 cycling catalogue provide the documentary references. Neither is a current OpticalH stock promise. For a new purchase, consult our current sunglasses catalogue and the details of the exact combination you choose.
